The total cost for the project was $220,000, Steffy added. Peppered throughout the city, the new-and-improved stations can be found in 16 paid, off-street locations in downtown Monterey, Cannery Row and the waterfront area. Steffy said the idea of replacing longstanding pay stations, which had served Monterey for 14 years, began circulating city discussions a year ago. “I think the big goal was going green,” said Cristie Steffy, Monterey Parking Superintendent. Last week, the city announced the completion of 28 solar-powered and paperless pay stations to replace outdated pay-and-display and pay-by-space meters that had previously monitored parking. MONTEREY – Patrons looking to park in the city of Monterey now have access to a new, eco-friendly method to securing a space for their cars.
